PEI Symphony Orchestra Announces 2024–25 Season

Oct. 15, 2023 - Jaelem Bhate and the PEI Symphony Orchestra stand for applause.

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE — June 3, 2024 — The PEI Symphony Orchestra (PEISO) proudly unveils its much-anticipated 2024–25 concert season, setting the stage for a new chapter as we welcome new Music Director, Jaelem Bhate. Entering its 57th season, the PEISO invites all music lovers and enthusiasts to celebrate new beginnings, with four unique and engaging concerts taking place on Sundays at 2:30 pm at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

“I am honoured to join the PEISO community as the new music director, and to share with musicians, patrons and all Islanders timeless masterworks, thrilling new music, and sublime soloists,” said new PEISO Music Director, Jaelem Bhate.  “Music has the power to change your day, your week, or even your life.  The 2024-25 season is designed to celebrate this new chapter.”

The season opens on October 20th with “People, places, and things,” a celebration of a new chapter beginning, and the building blocks of the foundation for years to come.  The concert line up includes music by Canadian composer Jared Miller (“Surge and Swell”), along with works by Erik Satie (“Gymnopédies 1 & 3,” orch. Debussy), Helena Munktell (“Bränningar”), and Sergei Rachmaninoff (“Symphonic Dances”).

On November 24th, PEISO welcomes guest oboist Ari Cohen Mann, who will perform the rarely heard Oboe Concerto by Clémence de Grandval.  This concert, entitled “Influencers” highlights how the course of history can often be changed by one good influencer, which is reflected with music by Leonard Bernstein (“Overture to Candide”) and Florence Price (“Symphony No. 1 in E minor”).

Ex-Romantico” kicks off the second half of the season on March 2nd. Along with music by Gabriel Fauré (“Pavane”) and Felix Mendelssohn (“Symphony No. 3 in A minor”), guest soloist James Sommerville, former principal horn of the Boston Symphony, joins the PEISO for the Island premiere of the boundless Kati Agócs’ Horn Concerto, co-commissioned by the PEISO.

The season wraps up on April 6th with “Encounters,” an adventurous and thunderous finale.   Featuring works by Caroline Shaw (“The Observatory”), Mason Bates (“Mothership”) and Modest Mussorgsky (“Pictures at an Exhibition”), “Encounters” is music that speaks to engagement across cultures, communities and geography.

“The concert season programs deftly blend old and new, reflect our dedication to diversity and innovation, and establish the launch of Jaelem’s vision for PEISO,” stated PEISO Board President Dr. David Sharpe.  “It is a thrilling season ahead that offers concertgoers an immersive journey through the rich and varied soundscape of orchestral music.  From the cherished classics to ground-breaking compositions of living artists, and collaboration with local talents, our season promises to captivate and inspire audiences of all backgrounds in what is a new and exciting chapter for PEISO.”

To kick-off the season, take advantage of the early-bird subscription offer for all four concerts: choose any seat (including balcony) for $179 (includes HST and service fee). This offer is available until August 17th, after which series subscriptions will be available on a tiered basis ranging from $179 to $225 (includes HST and service fee).

As a thank you to our loyal patrons, subscribers from last year’s season will have priority access until June 15th, after which un-renewed subscription seats will be released to the public. To keep PEISO concerts accessible to students and families, subscriptions and single tickets for children, youth, and students are half-price.
