“The World of Mahler 3!”
(Canadian premiere of orchestral reduction by Yoon Jae Lee)
The PEI Symphony Orchestra is preparing to present one of the most ambitious works in the symphonic repertoire, both in length and scope that is Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 3. This massive undertaking will be the fourth and final concert of the PEISO’s 51st season and is titled ‘The World of Mahler 3’. Music Director and Maestro Mark Shapiro will lead the orchestra and audience in a musical celebration of spring with a choral-orchestral extravaganza as Austrian Composer Mahler seeks to convey the entire universe, its essential divinity and the response it evokes in the human soul. A musical reflection of nature spanning over an hour and a half, it is as tremendous as its aim. Hear why Mahler said, “the Symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.”
This infrequently performed masterpiece is considered one of the 10 greatest symphonies of all time by BBC Music Magazine and will feature an extended orchestra, a combined treble chorus of 70 adults and youth – comprising members of Sirens, Summerside Community Choir, The UPEI Women’s Ensemble, Luminos Ensemble, Le Ragazze Girls Vocal Ensemble and Harmonia Girl’s Choir – and mezzo-soprano soloist Christianne Rushton.
A magnificent work, the Symphony no.3 has never been attempted or heard live in Charlottetown before. Maestro Shapiro said, “In accordance with our artistic and organizational mission, as well as our growing reputation for musical excellence, community engagement and innovation in programming, we are thrilled to be breaking new ground with this phenomenal project. I am absolutely delighted that so many of PEI’s finest musical organizations and leaders have stepped forward to join us for this seminal event. It is a special thrill for all of us to be able to share the stage with the next generation of vocal artists, and to celebrate together their personal discovery of this uniquely powerful and moving repertoire.”
Tickets can be purchased online and in person at the Confederation Centre Box Office. The concert takes place on April 14, 2019 at the Homburg Theatre in Confederation Centre of the Arts.
